Corporate resilience training and building the business case

Corporate resilience training – at the start of making the business case … stress!

Stress affects one in five of the working population across all levels of an organisation. It is now the single biggest cause of sickness in the UK. Over 105 million days are lost to stress each year – costing UK employers £1.24 billion.

Continuing the Business Case – the links from Stress to Productivity

  • 10% of staff with low stress levels are disengaged, versus 57% of those with high stress levels.
  • High stress employees took an average of 6 days a year off sick, compared with 2.6 days a year for employees reporting low stress levels.
  • Presenteeism is 50% higher among high stress staff, with these individuals attending work for 16 days a year when unwell, compared with 10 days for employees with low stress.
  • Depression is associated with 2 hours per worker per week of lost productive time. Stewart et al (2002).

  • Lower presenteeism – by building awareness of the signs and symptoms of burnout and helping people access the various forms of support which the organization provides.
  • Faster return to work – by accurate diagnosis and prompt access to the best treatment available (where applicable).
  • Higher organizational commitment – by demonstrating that the organization is acting to reduce the harmful effects of stress, thereby reinforcing the employment contract.
  • Higher employee engagement – by removing the barriers to employee engagement and building on the organisation’s strengths.
  • Increased productivity – from greater task focus and commitment.

Outcomes #1 – Resilience training within sales-function of Mars Food:

  • <0.5% Absence in sales function due to mental health related issues.
  • 64% of employees reported a decrease in their stress levels at home or work.
  • 89% said that leadership had positively supported their energy levels and resilience.
  • 68% said that the challenge had helped them to make long term changes to support their wellbeing.
  • 67% of associates reported the quality of their sleep to be either good or excellent, (compared to 42% prior to the intervention).
  • 59% of associates report their daily productivity to be above 90% (compared to 39% prior to the intervention).

Outcomes #2 – Resilience training within the legal function of a multinational organisation (Oil & Gas):

  • 17% improvement in employee engagement levels.
  • 11% increase in perception of ‘job fit’.
  • 13% improvement in employee relationships.
  • 11% improvement in supervisory relationships.
  • 20% reduction in stress & risk of stress-related ill health.
  • 7% reduction in employee turnover intention

Outcomes #3 – Resilience training within a multinational organisation (Oil & Gas):

Six months after a Resilience workshop, attendees showed:

  • Lower Chronic Fatigue*
  • Lower Need for Recovery
  • Fewer Cognitive Failures
  • Lower Affective Rumination*
  • Better Sleep Quality

The case for early intervention at work

The results of Cognacity’s corporate resilience training is consistent with research that suggests early intervention in stress-related ill health is effective:

  • Early identification of anxiety and depressive disorders in 140,000 employees
  • 10% – 20% increased probability of recovery

Estimating the benefits of Cognacity training in organisations

The estimated cost of work-related stress is £966 per employee, due to absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover (excluding other factors).

Cognacity’s corporate resilience training has led to:

  • Increased Employee engagement – 17%
  • Decreased stress-related ill health – 20%
  • Statistically significant reductions in fatigue 6 months after training
  • Statistically significant increases in psychological wellbeing 6 months after training

If we estimate that resilience training therefore has a 20% reduction in overall  stress-related absenteeism and turnover, and 17% reduction in presenteeism, the benefits from resilience training would be a minimum of £172 per employee.
