Pieter Kruger graduated with distinction in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Free State and obtained a PhD from the North-West University, South Africa. He started his career as a clinical psychologist in the South African Defence Force after which he joined a private practice. In 2006 he moved to the UK, initially working as a clinical psychologist at the Capio Nightingale Hospital, as well as a sport psychologist for the Harlequins Premiership Rugby Club. He completed an advanced certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the Albert Ellis Institute, New York, (chartered by the New York State University) and also studied at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research in Philadelphia, USA. Pieter was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at London Metropolitan University for three years and is currently still a visiting lecturer. He works internationally as a Consultant Sports Psychologist with various elite teams and is a regular contributor to the Sunday Telegraph’s health and well-being column.
Pieter has worked in various settings (public and private sectors) as both a clinical and sport psychologist since 2002. He has special interests in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders and prefers a CBT approach, although he has been trained in various other psychological modalities as well. He furthermore has an interest in the fields of performance, positive and preventative psychology and its application in sports and business settings.
Pieter played provincial schools rugby, competed in the junior world cycling championships and won 52 provincial and 5 national cycling titles during his 11 year pro-am cycling career. He worked as a sport psychological consultant for various South African national teams (including the U/21 World Cup rugby team and senior netball team), the North-West University Rugby Institute, the Super 12 Sharks and Bulls rugby teams, as well as the Australian based Super 14 Brumbies rugby team.
